Leveraging AI for Feedback in iLearn
The new AI-powered Rewrite option in Flexible Grading helps instructors improve the clarity and tone of their feedback. This tool uses generative AI to reword instructor-authored comments—whether they are rough notes, bullet points, or complete sentences—into more polished and student-friendly language.

When providing overall feedback on submissions in Flexible Grading, the Rewrite option becomes available when an instructor adds at least 30 characters. After entering your own comments, instructors can select Rewrite to generate a suggested version of the feedback. A banner clearly indicates that the suggestion is AI-generated.
You can discard, replace, or try again to regenerate the suggestion. Discarding or canceling the suggestion restores the original input. Selecting "Replace" will accept the suggestion and allow instructors to continue editing the revised feedback directly in the rich text editor.
Instructors can use the Rewrite option multiple times on the same feedback to refine their message further.
If you are using a rubric to grade an assignment, you can also use the AI Writing tools to summarize feedback based on selected rubric criteria.
Complete the rubric based on the student’s submission. You can enable the “Show descriptions” option to see more detailed rubric criteria. After completing the rubric, click the “Summarize Feedback” button, and the AI Writing tool will provide detailed feedback based on the rubric options you have selected.
Keep in mind that the AI writing tool is not grading for you. Instead, it is designed to help instructors deliver clearer, more impactful feedback with less effort. Be sure to review and customize any AI suggested feedback with your own expertise.
